Carina E Exhaust

Hi there, I asked a mechanic to look at the exhaust pipe on my 96 Carina E 1.8 as it was noisey. He told me not to worry about the blow which was at the bottom of the manifold at a flexible joint but suggested it could fail on it's next MOT.

Has anyone in a similar situation been succesful in using a compound to fix this rather than replace the pipe please?
