'86 Corolla Gt 4age With An Idling Problem.. Help?

Hi.

I have an idling problem with my car it is a 1986 Toyota Corolla GT (4AGE) that has done 170,000km

I don't know very much about cars :unsure: but what it does it that when i start it up it idles at about 1.5rpm which is good but after a drive the idle speed increases to about 3rpm, and other times it will drop and stall for no reason at intersections. I have tried to alter the accelerator cable and it doesnt seem to be that, i was wondering if it could possibly be the automatic choke?? and if not what else it could be.
