i've just tried to get quotes online for the type of supra i want and one company replied with a page saying that they couldnt cause i was too young and another saying that they couldnt find any quotes, do you have to be 21 and over to drive supra's? if so then....*****..., im only looking for a project car but if it was finished before my 21st birthday then i'd be kicking myself for not being able to drive it, im 19 by the way.

I feel you pain mate. When I passed my test (when I was 18), I bought an Escort 1.6 Ghia off my parents. The insurance companies classed it as a sports car! (I could out do an XR3i - I was told by a mechanic who took if off my hands after it was driven into). Now it was a good car and I was going to look after and treat it right. However I was getting quotes for upto £4000 (full comp).

They see it that if you buy a sporty car no matter who your are while you're young, you'll race it, drive it badly & crash lots. That's why it's high insurance you young drivers in fast cars. Motor bikes are worse and rightly so, you have to step up engine size over time. This is because new riders are too inexperienced to handle a powerfull bike.

I hate to say it, but I think the same should happen with cars. Too many young drivers have accidents being idiots, trying to show off and don't even need to be in a fast car. Sadly those people spoil it for everyone else.

I waited til I was 25 before buying my Celica, as that's when insurance gets cheaper. Sadly there's no way around it. If you want a powerfull car when you're young, you've got to pay the money!

It's all down to risk to them paying out.

ok, i mean technically i dont have to insure it if its going to be a project car anyway will i?...seeing as how it wont be on the road and all that.

As long as its not stolen or catches fire! I think you can get off road insurance to cover these.......

but if i were to declare it off the road would it still need insurance?

So long as its on private land.. nope..

You dont need insurance if it's off road,(ie on private land) but what happens if it gets nicked or spontaniously combusts! I'm not sure your houshold insurance would like to pick up the tab if it burnt yer garage down (or house!) Some of the specialist companies will have a policy for a project car, the risk is minimal if its not going to be used on the road for some time

Kingo

If you want to use Comparison websites thats fine, but as soon as you find the best few deals on there, try the websited for those companies seperatly as you will probably reduce the price again as the comparison website adds some on to make their own money (Your probably not stupid and already know this)

I have my golf and my crx insured with More Than as they were the cheapest, the golf is just a track car and the crx is a project car.... my rolla is my runabout (insured with direct line) and they all cost under £400 each per year (i shopped around with all 3 cars and went for the cheapest place) and pay all in 1 go so cheaper again... of course now a days you can get multi car discounts, I'd go for one of those if i were you it works.. but just insure ya car for as little as you can if it is a project you prob wont need a curtesy car..

I feel safe if any of my cars are stolen i know i am covered.. think its best :)

hope this helps
