Alarm Immobilisor Problem?

Please help! My husband is sick at the moment so I'm posting this and as I'm no mechanic the terminology may be a bit weird!

Have a lovely 14 old Carina E automatic - 2 litre. The key fob for the alarm (Scorpion Totyota 5000) hasn't worked for a few months. Yesterday hubby left lights on and Battery died so today he took it off to charge it. Unfortunately in his sick stupor he didn't rememebr to switch the alarm off first and when he disconnected the Battery lead it screeched to all hell.. So he used his key to switch it off inside the engine ( 'cos his fob doesn't work). He replaced the charged Battery and switched alarm back on but now the car won't start. Had Direct Line breakdown people to it and they are 90% sure (???) its an alarm problem. The battery is fine apparently and they have checked the power circuit (or something like that) so they think the immobilser has activated.

As its down the bottom of a long drive they can't get their recovery vehicle down and say they will bring specialist equipment to do it if we pay extra. I've looked at the posts on here and their seems quite a few knowledable people who mention resynchronising the key fob to deactivate the immobilisor. The LED light and battery work in the remote fob but even when we hold both buttons down for ten seconds as advised it doesn't seem to reset the alarm.. I've also read about a further step, resetting the circuitry, for a different Toyota model. Does anyone know how to do this for a Carina and more importantly is it worth a try?

Failing that does anyone have any advice for how we can get the immobilisor to deactivate so that it will let us start the car? I'm hoping we won't have to pay Direct Line the dosh they want to recover it if its possible.

Thanks so much - eagerly waiting for help!

Hi, you will need to find the alarm ECU, might be between the centre consul and steering wheel, there will be a few multi-plugs coming from it that need to be disconnected and the original car plugs reconnected to each other, this will do away with the alarm system and immobiliser. This system didn't come standard with the car but was fitted before the car was sold at the Toyota dealership.

Hope this helps,

Joe.

Remove the glovebox and disconnect the single, black earth wire thats connected to the earth point near the alarm ECU. This should disable the alarm and immobiliser.
