Unfortunaltely that sounds like the big-end bearing shells have failed. Any heavy knocking noise under load is going to be expensive.

These can be replaced with the engine in the car. However you need to remove the sump to gain access. The problem is caused by lack of oil. You might be lucky in as much that the crankshaft may not be damaged.

You need a proper diagnosis. If it is what I suggest then you need to get it repaired now, if not sooner. It will only get worse.

That is low mileage. Particurly for a pre-VVTI car, which aren't usually a problem for oil usage. Does it burn oil? (ie any top-ups between services?). Problems with big ends should be audable if revved hard with the car stationery.

Try to simulate the noise in another gear. or driving up a relatively steep incline in a higher gear. If it is the big-end bearing this will confirm it.

Otherwise if it is ONLY in third, you may have a gearbox problem. There have been reports of gearbox problems on the earlier Avensis. (Can't recall the exact symptoms) - the advice tended to be to source a Carina E box as a swap. Doing a search might come up with something.

thanks again.yes i do top up oil between service but not much.while the car is stationary there is no sound even if i revve the engine.sound only starts when its in gear specially in 1st 2nd and 3rd.after that on high speed sound just fades away.

Doesn't sound like it is engine related then.

How much oil did you have to put into your gearbox? jack the front of the car up. Rotate one wheel and determine how much 'slop' there is before the opposite wheel moves. By holding the wheel and rotating the it back and forth you may be able to generate a knock through the differential. If this is the case - and play is excessive the problem lies here.

I have a similar problem with a corolla verso 1.8vvti model, get a knocking noise when driving car, only happens in 2nd,3rd,4th and 5th gears.when car is in neutral and i rev engine ther is no noise.took car to main dealers and they said ther is a problem with the gearbox, cost to replace box 2k..I haven`t checked geabox oil level yet as i have had a look and not able to locate where to top up from.

I have a 2001 1.8 VVTI hatchback and that developed a knocking noise at about 40,000. Was a known problem with bearings apparently in gearbox. Got it fixed for 500 quid but at garage would have been more like 800 and that was about 1-2 years ago. Very annoying when the car hasnt done much mileage and I look after it! Very disappointed with my Avensis.....By the way the mechanic showed me the bearing and it is probably worth only a few quid to manafacture
