Avensis Vermont With Engine Problems?

Hi, I have a Y reg Avensis Vermont.. at its mot in June it needed a new cat..... three weeks back the engine management light came on.... forked out for diagnosis and the garage fitted a new lamba sensor.. also said spark plugs were sooted and engine had noise.. have been told cannot give complete diagnosis whichout full strip down... obviously this takes time and will cost... estimates for strip down and rebuild over £1500...engine management light has come back on today... I have only owned the car since Jan paid £3000 reluctant to send good money after bad..... any suggestions welcome? :rolleyes:
