I have a Chilton manual , "covers all US and Canadian models of the RAV4", I presume Haynes is British, could that be the difference???????

No, they are both for the US cars. Haynes claimed some many months ago that a British RAV4 manual would be in production by September, but I have not seen any sign of it in their advance publicity.

E-mail them to ask, they usually reply to such requests.

No idea about the chilterns. The Haynes covers the 4.1 from 1996 in the USA but basically its very similar to the 4.1 from 1994 in the UK.
