Cost Of Running Your Rav

With the talk about warranties, service costs, etc. I have just worked out what my RAV4 stands me in each month - wonder how you guys compare ....

Fixed Cost per Month:

RFL (Tax) = £25.00

Insurance = £19.00

Warranty = £27.50 (inc Full RAC Cover)

Servicing = £18.50

Cost/Month = £90.00

Variable Costs:

Petrol = 18p/Mile (£1.20/l, 30 mpg)

Tyres = 0.9p/Mile (£90/tyre, 40,000 Mile life)

Fuel/Month = £150

Tyres/Month = £7.50

So total running cost for RAV4 per month, based on 10,000 PA

Fixed Costs = £90

Variable = £157.50

TOTAL = £257.50

I don't think I have forgotten anything? - I have ignored consumables like bulbs, etc as they are nominal cost.

So:

#1 - with the hike in road tax next year, fixed costs for car will go up by about 9%, and overall costs by about 3% - which puts into perspective how the impact of this RFL increase has been exaggerated wildly in the press and the impact of it on running a car does not make a massive impact.

#2 - the more you use your car, the greater the cost (obvious, I know) but if you want to cut your motoring costs, driving less has the greatest impact.

What I have not included above is Depreciation as that is really up in the air, but I would guess a 3 year old XT3 is now worth about £7k (:( ) and in two years should still surely be worth at least £3.5k :blink: - so call that £146 lost each month for next two years....

Fuel/Month = £150 £171.45
