No Accelerator Response

Hi all, ive been driving the Yaris a bit lately and have come across an intermittent problem with the throttle, every now and then the engine warning light comes on (yellow one) and the accelerator stops working although the engine ticks over at about 1500rpm (im assuming its going into some sort of emergency limp mode) it stays like this unless the engine is turned off for a minute or so and then it goes back to normal and will drive ok for a few hours or weeks, any ideas? Ooops, forgot to add its a 52 plate, diesel :D

well matey thats what happens when you buy a diesel lol

but other than that i have no idea

Anybody got any ideas? Im assuming this might not be a common fault then, will a fault code reader flag this sort of problem up? :(
