Difficulty Drifting Mr2 Turbo!

Does anyone else find that it's very difficult to hold a drift in 2nd in your turbo? I just find that there's not enough power off boost before 3k odd, and the turbo is so agressive when it comes on boost that I always tend to lose the drift into a spin (s'pose LSD doen't help the sudden power either!).

I try damb hard to counter the oversteer with a lot of opposite lock but there's just not enough grip on the front wheels to pull it back!

Think a skid pan session is in order!

Probably cos the engine is in the wrong place.......and all the weight is at the back..... :(

All the best drift cars are front engined rear wheel drive....

As Nippon says .. it's not setup right .. the weight is all wrong for drifting.

Want a drift car? Get a Silvia S15 .. they are awesome ..

Yea I figured that was the problem

I'd still like to be able to get it good though. I can control a drift in 2nd easilly like coming off a juntion where you're drifting in a straight line (if you understand what I mean  ) but it's just trying to do big circles in an open area and hold the car...

My mate has a 1.2 Starlet with a welded diff which is absolutely awesome at drifting! It's great to watch that little 1.2 embarass a lot better cars (including me :crybaby: )

I get a nice sideways drift on turns and roundabouts .. all at 10 mph ..

But a lot of it is "oh sh*t" and I end up either facing the wrong way or not holding it long enough.

But when I pull it off sweetly .. it's quality.

At a Reading car meet a few months back, we were all going from one car park to another and I drifted out of the T-junction and took up both lanes of a dual carrage way for about 100m .. an escort cossie couldn't overtake as the front of the car was in one lane and the rear in the other ..

I then eased off and came to a stop at the lights ..

Looked totally class - but was compleatly un-intentional ..

Yea I know what you mean about being unintentional

I've driven FR car and they are much easier to control as most of the weight is over the front wheels, didn't realise the MR2 would be so difficult!

Last night I came off a roundabout in third in the wet and because of the camber of the road the rear came out and I had to correct it before I hit a kurb! I can't wait till summer comes and I can see what it handles like on warm/dry roads

Mk2 MR2s are lethal !!!! once the back end is out on a corner and you think you've got it under control it'll grip and snap you back round the other way quicker than you can say " Is that tree coming my way ?!?!?!?"

The Mk1s were much easier to chuck about on corners and keep control of..........If I were you I wouldn't try too hard once the summer comes until you've got it mastered......you may find that you won't have a car to drive ;)

I can drift mine out of junctions at will and at any speed......cos I've had them for going on 10 years....but they still catch me unaware sometimes.......Mk2s are a !Removed! !...

Great fun tho' :D

the best drift i ever got was unintentional at castle combe, coming round past the pit lane on to the starting grid straight bit fast through the bend had the back steped out only about a foot for the whole bend, was class, the girlfriend was in the passenger seat and thought it was intentional showing off and wasn't even slightly worried, i was ****ting it  sliding at 80+ is always worrying even if its only grass on the inside.

the first time I had it out in the rain I was just booting it coming off a round about. Back end was well out into the lane of the oncoming traffic.

My mate infront of me saw it in his rear view mirror and thought I was a gonner !! Luckily (somehow) I held it out there, then pulled it back in..... twas very scary !

The second time.. I crashed... lol

Jap reviews of the mr2 Turbo noted the car was 'uncontrollable' in drifting situations. I really wouldnt advise it. As you can see most drifts were by mistake but if you intentionally try to do it...bye bye mr2.

Put plainly drifting in an mr2 turbo is just not fun. You just end up in a 'panic' drift situation and you feel like your on the brink of losin it everytime. Have you ever seen an F1 car hold a drift? Its the curse of MR.

Give me a s13/14/15/rx7 or any FR anyday. Now they are a barrel o laffs.

But to drive the mr2 like a track car and itll thrash the hell outta any FR. And that is what it was made for at the end of the day.

Like its been said before, front engined RWD is best! My S14a was very easy to drift and control, used to use it to my advantage at junctions quite often, wouldnt even consider doing it with the mr2.

Mr2 has this amazing ability to understeer, then drift then remember its RWD and fly 180 dgrees, scary flippin thing!
