Intermitent Engine Noise On Carina?

Hi can anyone help? I have a 93 carina e 2l exec auto 3sfe. The car has developed an intermitent slight whinning noise when: I come to a halt and move the gear leaver from neutral to drive - it disappears when i move back to neutral. I would like to fix this but the garage has told me when it next happens drive to them and leave the engine running outside - what are the chances of that with an intermitent fault!!!! Any help would be much apreciated. Mark
