i have a 2005 1.8 avensis t4 estate got it from main dealer november 08 with 12 month warranty.the air conditioning is blowing coolish but it isn't cold hoping it just wants regasing unless anybody has any other idea's.wondering if regasing is covered by warranty.have been on to main dealer but having to wait for service dept to get back to us tomorrow as weren't in today and nobody else wanted to answer the question.just want somebody else's opinion as would not trust dealer as they seem to try and wriggle out of any work that requires attention.many thanks in advance.

I think that perhaps you should have a bit more faith in Toyota main dealers. My family and I have owned 11 various Toyotas over the past 22 years and have never had an occasion when a dealer has tried to 'wriggle out' of any responsibilty, so give'em a chance.

Might be an idea to turn up in person with the car at the garage though rather than relying on telephone, email etc., then at least they will have to take your concern seriously.

I think they would readily re-gas the A/C under warranty, but better check the small print first perhaps. Good luck.

as expected main dealer said air con wasn't covered by warranty as is classed as a wear and tear item gave us the option of a service+regas of air con system for £120 or just a regas for £59.99.to be honest lost all faith in main dealer we purchased car from every thing was fine until we picked the car up and only half work we requested doing was done and gradually things got worse had to fight tooth and nail to get rest of work done.headlights misted up a common fault on the avensis as i can gather they didn't want to replace them, our brakes have constantly squeked from day one been looked at twice both times squek disappeared for afew days then reappeared after being told theres nothing wrong with them.to be honest will be glad when 12 month warranty period is over as won't be tied to main dealer group any longer and will take car somewhere else.sorry for the bit of a rant but just a little p***** off.never had this problem with mitsubishi main dealer they couldn't do enough for you maybe we were just spoilt.

as vissible this air con issue is very often. it looks that the air con system assembly quality is not good.

The MrT always remains the way to disclaim some issues and you (!!!!) had to negotiate what faults are normally covered by 1 year warranty before have purchased (and get their written coonfirmation). Now you're face to face to this issue. Their statements as (a wear and tear item ) is absolutely wrong. How can it be?????????????? that a new air con system does not work -- I say NEW because mine works since 2003 and up to now it works fine and give no troubles to me during our hot summer.

Have you looked at the cabin filter, it could be blocked restricting the air flow

The filter won't have any effect on the temp it will only effect the air flow.

The filter won't have any effect on the temp it will only effect the air flow.

the air con performance is in question but not a filter condition.

you could be right, but if the filter was completely blocked he would have very little airflow entering the cabin, then it does not matter how cold the a/c is, you wont feel the air flow, you must have a good airflow to circulate air in the cabin, besides is it not worth checking the filter, its probabley the cheapest part of the a/c system,but i agree if the cold air does not go through the cabin filter it will not make any differance, depends on how the system works

I don't think it is a common fault as such, the problem seems to be how people use air con or not, which seems to be the usual way they start to fail. Maybe your system does want a re gas. It's down to ambient temperature and starting temperature of the car, my air con will struggle to cool the car down some days and other days I have to turn it off, it is too cold. If the dealer says that air con re gas is wear and tear, you should be free to get service at another supplier and keep the warranty intact, an air con specialist near me is offering a system test, service and re gas for £89. I think one of the big auto centre's offer a re gas for £49.

Not sure it is a common fault either to be fair. Mine is used everyday of the year, be it cold or hot air coming out. Ive had mine since 2005, and its still ice cold on request! Perhaps there is another Toyota dealer you can try for a 2nd opinion, and more importantly a 2nd quote?! Might be cheaper....

Failing that, there are, as mentioned before, a range of other places to take it for a re gas. Worth also looking up A/C in the Yellow Pages, you may get lucky and have a specialist in yr region who can take a looksy. The above quoted £89 for a service/test/re gas etc seems very good value and not too rare to find IMHO.

I don't know why but I was under the impression that a warranty on air con covers the compressor and "hard" aprts of the system but not a regas even in a brand new car. I could be wrong here so any dealers or mechanics know what is and isn't covered?

took car to nationwide auto centre yesterday who regassed,tested,cleaned and oiled air con system for £69.99 thought was a real bargain excellent service air con now icey cold again bliss in the recent weather.they did say the air con system had very little gas in it and had checked for leaks and found none but to keep a eye on temp in case it developed one they may have missed and they could retest again and repair.

Not just the Avensis, it's a common fault with aircon. The problem was highlighted by Parts-King in another thread, the air con seals can get dry from lack of use during the winter months and leak slightly. The air con should be switched on periodically to run the gas and lubricant around the system to prevent this.

If the car has never been regassed since it was built in 2005 (or earlier), then I don't think it has done too bad really. Plus the fact that every manufacturer puts in just enough gas and not the full amount, it saves them quite a few bob.
