I can foresee problems when the current owner has to surrender the tax disc and the new owner wants to drive it home

I suppose there will be a delay when notifying DVLA

Why are UK government 'adverts' so naff?

Have a nice clear windscreen without that scrappy paper disk though...

--edit--

Was curious so I checked. My tax disk expires on 30th September, don't suppose I'll be getting a replacement then :)

No - the current one is your last.

Nothing to worry about though. Goebells told us so as he eyed up the cattle trucks... And the 'nothing to hide nothing to fear' mantra has been repeatedly trotted out by our own government ever since so it must be true...

Yes and we all know how that ended...

Since the disc is dead, why do you still only get whole months of refund (and purchase I imagine)? Can't DVLA's computer handle days?

Or do I have to be the cynic and say it's just a way to keep/get more money off us?

For our cars, a whole months tax refund for the one is £10.83 and for the other £2.50. Splitting this down further into the actual days owed becomes a bit of o nonsense.

OTOH my mate who owns a Lexus RX350, which is £500 tax a year...

I just think the abolition of tax discs is utterly stupid.

For one thing, do we actually get ANY paperwork showing we have paid our car tax?!

If not, how the heck do we prove that we have?!

And if we do, then I don't see how they'd be saving any money vs a disc because they'd still need to send the paperwork out.

And even if they did make any savings, why is none of it being passed down to us?

Discs were only any good to show you had paid your duty

In the electronic age, there is no need to display a disc. ANPR will be used more and more (hence changes to number plate manufacture)

you will still apply and pay in the same way, mainly online, the disc save DVLA over 70 tonnes of paper a year (allegedly)

No don't be daft, you will not see any savings

The whole point of the changes is to make the system cheaper to administer (ie directly for Government and indirectly for us - less of our tax pennies spent) and to move more of DVLA's services online - not actually make it directly cheaper for the people paying the tax.

As regards proof of purchase, where you renew online you currently get e-mail confirmation that you have renewed - this will continue.

Where you renew at the Post Office, you get a receipt which you can attach to the V11 - this will continue.

Presumably if one can afford to buy and run something like a Lexus, you can afford to tax it.

Re: Tax disc refund - I meant that, although for you it wouldn't be worth divvying it down to a days' worth, for my expensive RX-owning friend them it would be as they're paying just over a £1 a day for that monster! I think it should be pretty easy if the system is generating the refunds automatically anyway, certainly wouldn't cost them anything extra in administration!

(Ironically, he has the 350 because he didn't have anywhere near enough money for the much-cheaper-to-run RX400h! The 350 was the only large automatic we could find that had a torque converter. If anyone knows of a reliable and affordable (Like, less than £3K) SUV/MPV that is cheaper to run and is automatic, but not crappy CVT or Semi-auto, then he will be your best friend forever  )

Re: Tax disc paper - My point is, what if the ANPR says you don't have tax due to a glitch? How can you prove it without legal documentation?

The tax disc didn't just show that you had paid; It was *proof*. This was why it had all these anti-counterfeiting markings on it.

If you got pulled for not having paid your tax when you had, the tax disc would be clearly visible and, once they made sure it wasn't a fake, they would be forced to investigate further. Without the disc, you will have no recourse - I know for a fact that that e-mail notification would be completely inadmissible as proof to the police or a court; If it did, every tom, ***** or harry would be printing off their own home-made ones in the blink of an eye and swearing blind that they'd paid!

I already have this issue with proof of address, due to everyone wanting to do everything electronically (Yeah, great, you can print out your bank statement, gas bill, phone bill etc. but nobody will accept that as proof of address for obvious reasons!).

With the disc, you would at least have strong enough proof to force them to dig deeper if there was a glitch in the system, but without it nobody will give a smeg and you'd be much more likely to end up getting fined, or maybe even your car crushed if you continue to argue!

You can check online that it is paid for and up to date, you will have a receipt too. If it shows online it is paid, then take a dump

Failing that, speak to your MP as it will be law on 1st Oct and there will be tiddly squat you can do :thumbsup:
