Vibration sound after changing air filter

Hi

I have a 2009 Avensis , I recently had a service and after they changed the air filter I have a low pitch humming noise when I rev the car . At first I thought a hole in exhaust but my mechanic checked it and he  ant find a hole . I read somewhere about air intake hose being lose so I checked it and it is , the foam around the hose where it enters the box has worn away , I tried sealing the box where it enters the box with Tech 7 but it doesn't last , the noise comes back again . Anybody have an idea of how to resolve this issue , I can't remove the air intake hose as somebody rounded the head of the bolt so can't get at it to remove it. Any ideas on what to seal it with.

Hi John, welcome to the forum

Iirc the 2 solutions that have been reported here either involve replacing the foam with similar or using self tappers.

Thanks Scott

I have put in self tappers with the tech 7 , but it comes back still , I reckon next stop is the foam . Just wondering would it be that the air filter the mechanic put in is not a toyota one , could a different air filter be bigger and not allow the box to shut down fully thus creating an air leak . I never had this issue when I went to a main dealer who used official toyota parts .

Hi all

I have sealed up the air box and replaced all foam that was missing . The noise is still there , mechanic says no hole in exhaust . The only thing I'm thing is , they replaced the air filter with a generic air filter , should I only use genuine toyota air filter like I always did in past, could a generic air filter make car have a deep exhaust type sound ?

Problem solved , I went and got an official toyota air filter and noise is gone , looks like generic air filters don't do in certain cars .

Useful to know, bet it's similar with other cars too.

Cheers

It sounds like the third party air filter material is different, and not able to damp air resonance compared to the genuine Toyota filter. I have Crosland filter, and it not bad most of the time, unless I use large open throttle. Compare it to having K&N filter or even no filter and box at all. Induction noise.

I still have an old genuine air filter, so will compare it with a spare Crosland.
