Corolla Turbo?

Hi all,

I've got a Corolla GXI with the 7afe engine, i've seen from the US a Turbo Kit for the engine, but im unsure on a few things which im hoping some of you guys in the know can help me with

1) They say the Turbo kit is for the US version of the car, does anybody know if my 7afe is the same as the US 7afe?

2) Will the stock internals of the engine be able to take a Turbo? it would be only running at about 6 psi boost.

Was looking into a engine change, but then thought if this will work i'd give it a go :)

Thanks in advance

Hi There

In answer to your questions;

1) All 7AFE engines are more or less the same, the ECU's may be different however and not an issue.

2) Stock internals will be ok for 6 Psi, anything above that and you are in a different world requiring stronger internals and better fuelling.

Lastly, you will still be able to use this kit if you decide to go 4AGZE in the future to run more power!

Hi Nad,

Thanks for the help

Think i might as well give it a go then, see what happens

so in the future i have the option to change to the 4agze and then turbo it? :D

Depending on how much work you want todo. I got oversized .020 and piston rings from the US only about £80inc Shipping etc, and still looking for a old '90's gti for a cylinder head. 7AGE :D

Since I've got the engine striped down i'll be getting the con rods and crank shaft strengthened with mind to maybe adding a turbo later on.

Since from all the information i've found on the web its you con rods that would go first if you put in to much boost.

why dont you just Turbo yours whilst its in bits?

surely a standard 7afe with turbo is gonna paste a 7age??

it all comes down to reliability, the 7A-FE had its problems with std power. i would defo look at uprating the lubrication, pitson, crank and rods to be sure.

that is unless 6psi is ok for you but be warned boost is like a drug when you get a taste for it you just want more :D

Thanks Dawesy, it says that 6psi is going to give 56% more power, so that'll be plenty for now :D

i was just worried that the engine couldnt take it at all, but if it should be ok at 6psi that'll do for me :D

what kind of problems did the 7afe have? mine seems ok

 right thanks for the warning

Your going have to watch, you rev that baby to high with a turbo an she will go pop. From what I've read the crank shaft, con rods, bearings and crank cam-pulley are a lot weaker on the 7AFE so if you are going to spend £250-£500 on a turbo, then the £100 or so i was quoted for de-seaming, balancing and strengthening the rods is worth it. :bookworm:

But i think I've almost got my hands on a good gti to nick the head off so i'll tell you how the convertion went in a month or so ;)

Right, thanks

I'll have to have a good think about it then :D

And i'll let you know if i go ahead with it
