Avensis D4d Noise When Accelerating

last summer my avensis d4d diesel estate developed a strange intermittent noise. The noise would generally occur after driving for a while and seemed to happen more whilst driving at speed on the motorway. A loud humming noise would suddenly start and would get louder as I pressed my accelerator or it would decrease in noise if I released my foot off the accelerator. The noise was very intermittent. I drove from Doncaster to London one day without a single noise for about 180 miles then suddenly the noise appeared. The strange thing is it dissapeard during the winter so I thought everything was ok. During this summer the noise has returned and seems to occur more when it is a really warm day. It sometimes starts when I am driving around at low speed as well as high speed on a motorway. Because it is intermittent my garage could not find the problem. Has anyone experienced a similar problem.

- have all injectors tested -- this is first thing to do;

- have the fuell filter changed -- in case it serves for a long time;

- is turbo performance OK? what do you feel ????

the turbo does have an oil leak so the seals are probably on the way out but it hasnt affected the cars performance yet.
