Handling - Suspension Set Up Question

Bit of a newbie question alert - When seeting up a Corolla for improved handling whats the best startergy for anti roll bars.....on the 4wd GT4 as it understeers, an uprated rear anti roll bar helps balance things out by reducing rear end grip and counter acting the understeer....is it the same with a FWD Corolla? or is there a prefered method of seting up the anti roll bars for the best (balanced) handling

on the corolla the biggest problem is the rear imo, to much roll and the back just feels like its dragging itself along like a caravan. As we have a standard front strut which makes a hell of a difference to tighten the front up we need a rear tower bar, we have a rear strut on the facelift, a thicker anti roll bar would be better. im going for the full suspension set up near future so i can comment on my buys at a later date.

tower bro, may go for under car later, the rear end annoys me so want to stiffen it up. i may also go for one inside the car between the b pillar tower near the passenger footwells. I will see once the car is on coilovers of what i can improve on if i need to. but defo will get the rear tower brace.

An uprated rear anti-roll bar (swaybar) will help cut down on oversteer.

A quote I got from Whiteline Automotives website a while ago...

Q. What do swaybars do?

A. Swaybars.. or Anti-Roll bars as they are called in the UK (Swaybars is the Aussie name).. link the 2 corners of the suspension together.. when you corner, and your car tries to go down on one side, the car resists this rolling tendancy (bodyroll).

Most cars are designed to slightly understeer.. as this is easier for the average driver to cope with, rather than having oversteer where the back end can step out and catch you by surprise.

The stiffness in the rear is increased, which loads the rear wheels uneavenly and reduces their grip a little, this allows the front to be more evenly loaded and gives a lot more front end grip. Remember.. it's the front that steers the car.

A rear anti-roll bar on a FWD car will give better traction through the car and generally reduce understeer.

Also.. on a car that has been lowered quite a bit (more than 30mm) an uprated rollbar will stop the suspension from bottoming out.. ever seen a lowered car "bounce" round corners and bends?.. this is because of the bodyroll. the car leans over and compresses the suspension, then when the car hits undulations and bumps in the road, the wheel leaves the ground and the car looses grips because it has ran out of suspension travel. an uprated antiroll bar goes a long way of preventing this and keeps the suspension working as it should be.

This must be one of the best mods you can do to improove the handling of your car, and i would highly recommend getting them before lowering a car.

Is there any need for our tsports to have one on the front under the car if we have a strut bar, im thinking of changing the original tsport brace as it has a dampner would like a non-adjustable one :)

rear anti roll bar bridges look under your car it will be a thin bar going from the left wheel to the right wheel. we have one in our ts but the whiteline is thicker. a rear tower brace is what goes under your parcel shelf. ;) trd also make one

I was told that it's best to do this before you lower it?

Not sure if that's true or not.
