Avensis D4d Wont Start With Clutch In

Hi there.

My 04 Avensis 2.0 D4D T3-S has just done over 100,000 miles and is driving well. However recently if you try to start the car with it in gear (obviously with the clutch in) or just start it when in neutral with the clutch in the engine wont start and it sounds a bit clunky when turning over.

If I them leave it 10 seconds and start the car with the clutch out it starts ok.

The car is on its original clutch and gear changes seem ok while driving. It has always started ok before as used to start with it in gear for a quick getaway!

Is this a sign that something is on its way out?

Any advice greatly received.

Hi Dan, it could be the starter motor, DM Flywheel/clutch or both, I believe when the dmf/clutch assembly starts to wear out it clogs up the starter motor causing problems, lets hope that it's not the first signs! Very difficult like lots of faults to give you a positive answer on here but if you have a friendly local garage they may suggest a fix. Sometimes when the Battery has a faulty cell the extra load may cause it to do what yours is doing, the Battery can then recover and start the car normally, also check that the Battery terminals are clean and secure, then get a garage to do load test on the battery if the problem persists.

Regards Pete.
