Quick Question About Timing Belt ?

My car is a 55 2.0 d4d its on 130 000 and i need to have the belt changed.

The thing is the one garage i go to said i might as well have the tensioner, idler etc changed which comes in a kit by gates.

However there is another garage guy who used to work for toyota and he told me just to change the belt on its own everything else is a waste of time and money.

What do you guys reckon ?

If the pulleys ain't changed I doubt very much if either the belt manufacturer or fitter would be willing to provide any warranty for their work. Plus the additional cost would be minimal. Maybe you should ask both garages what warranty they would provide - if any.

Personally I don't think its worth the risk not to replace the tenioner at least.:)

Change the lot and you may want to consider your water pump as well. I know it all adds up but might save you money in the long run

In 1CD-FTV engine it's wery likely that you have to change tooth wheels also after 200tkm. They start wearing and damage the new belt.

First I have heard of that.

400k on standard toothwheels

With cars used as taxi, it's very common, because they idle so much.

To Avensis-Boy,

Your idler gear is made the old fashioned way, solid steel (no plastic rubbish) with a series bearing. Your tensioner is just a smal alloyed bodied hydraulic unit, if you see any sign of oil on it, change it. I would go along with Toyota Tech with the exception that i would change the water pump, as new belt may well knock out the water pump bearing. I no longer change cambelt unless customer agrees to changing the water pump. If you have the cash, change the lot for piece of mind.

Regards, Beagh.
