Advice On Replacing Rav4 Tyres

I have recently purchased a 07 plate Rav4 XT5 & have a quiery about changing the tyres which are Yokohama Geolander 255/65/17

When we bought the car we were told by the main dealer that the tyres had to be changed in the dealership due to them having a steel band round the alloy & required specialist equipment to carry out the job at rather a high price, £200 for the tyre then a further £150 if the steel band had any damage to it!!

Just wondering if anyone can shed any light on the subject of having their tyres changed on Rav4 XTR models & if it is actually a dealer only job or not as i have had to put the spare on due to a screw in the rear offside & will have to get a new tyre replacement ASAP

I`m guessing your have the dreaded run flat tyres then. There are quite a few topics in this forum regarding these tyres/wheels. They should explain everything.

Yeah, take them to a normal tyre place, have them cut the tyres off, cut the steel band off with a grinder and replace with normal tyres. Then get a spare or some tyre weld for the boot. See thread below for some pictures on the proceedure. Im fed up of !Removed! run flats. So glad I found the thread below and also got good advice of the lads on this forum

Hang on , If you have run flats, how come you got a spare tyre??

Your dealer is full of you know what. Run flat tyres are are 18" and do require special tools. Your 17" tyres are normal and you can go to any good tyre retailer. Expect to pay around £115-£125 each.

Oh and welcome to the club!

Hi Neilsy + welcome, Just a bit confused, you say you have a 07 plate XT5 + that you have fitted the spare, that makes sense. Then you ask for guidance on the RAV4 XTR this model doesn't have a spare but has a (pump + gunk) kit instead, these areNOT runflats.. The only 2 models of rav fitted with runflats are the T180 + SR180 these require specialist fitting and are as your dealer describes, your XT5 has std tyres + as Anchs says can be bought repaired + replaced by any tyre dealer, hope this helps  Stew

I'm about to inherrit the RFT's on a T180. Is it as simple as cutting the tyre and grinding off the support ring? Can any tyre fitter then supply tyres on these rims? Does this affect insurance at all and does the tyre pressure monitor still work?

I live in the Highlands and want a winter tyre on - can this be fitted to exisiting 18" rims or do I have to buy new wheels?

Sorry for all the questions but trying to assess my options when I get my new car keys and it's a nightmare trying to read through 4 years worth of topics to get an answer...

Cheers

Go to link below. Page 12, post 10. It has pictures of somopne removing the tyres and ring. Not sure how it affects insurance etc etc but this is the way im going when mine need changing. I think any private tyre fitting company will probs do it for you, but I doubt the likes of National Tyres etc will. Hope that helps
