Gear Shift Indicator On Dash Failure

Hi -

First post on the forum and I'd appreciate any advice offered.

I recently (last week) bought a 1997 3.0l Prado TZ diesel. All is going fine except today the 'Drive' indicator light on the dashboard went out and has not since come back on. The fault is only affecting the 'D' indicator, 'P', 'R', 'N', '2' and 'L' are all fine.

My guess is that there is a micro-switch, or some kind of sensor on the gear shift selector that has failed in the 'D' position. Having test driven one Prado with the same problem a few weeks I wondered if anyone else had come across it. If so, is it a relatively easy fix?

Any advice much appreciated.

Are you sure it worked in the first place?

I have a 1997 LC Colorado and the "D" does not light up.

I assumed that this was by design - do you want an unnecessary dashboard light on while you are driving normally ?

The way I look at it is - if any of the other lights are not on then it must in "D" if you know what I mean.

Hope this helps.
