Help - Overheating Cynos

Hi All,

I am looking for your help again!

My 1993 Cynos has started giving me trouble again.

Last week it overheated on the way to work. I pulled in and let it cool

off and managed to get it to my mechanic. He did something to it, but

on the way to work the following day it overheated again.

I took it back to him and he removed the thermostat(!?). When I

collected it he said that if that didn't work to just "switch it off and

leave it at the side of the road". I can't afford another car just at

the moment :(

Following day it overheated again. I have noticed that if I am just

sitting in traffic or at less than 80kph, then the temp goes up but not

very far. It is only when I go over 80kph that it overheats.

Has anyone any ideas?

Thanks,

D

Do you have water in the cooling system?

Does the waterpump work?

Does the electric fan behind the radiator start when the engine is warm?

And of course as igormus wrote, the thermostat.

Hi,

I don't know much about cars - it was my mechanic who removed the thermostat.

@Balikbayan:

Yes, there is water in the cooling system, but it gets so hot that it boils off.

I read that to test the waterpump you can open the radiator cap (when cold!) and rev the engine to see if the level of the water changes, which it does.

The radiator fan does start when the engine is warm - it comes on if the car is in traffic or sitting idling for a while, but the car never overheats in those situations, only when I am driving at 80K per hour or above...

Still at a loss, but thanks for taking the time to reply.
