Tyre Issues On Gen 7 Celica

Hi Folks,

I'm hoping someone will be able to recommend a good set of new tyres for my Gen 7 VVTI Celica.

I have been using Goodyears Eagle F1's but they are prone to uneven wear (even after being tracked and balanced on several occasions).

its the inside edges of the tyres that are going, the bearings all seem fine and I have decided to get a slightly harder Tyre (12000 miles isn't good enough for me).

Does anyone have any recs? I am after something with a bit of grip ...... so nothing cheap and nasty, but slightly more hard wearing than the F1's, and hopefully ease the strain on my pocket!

Cheers

Vicky

You have not said whether you are using F1 Assys or F1 DSG3s

Im using FI assy and have done for many years. My wear rate is very even back and front but F1s are soft and will wear out quite quickly as they are designed as high performance.

10,000 on the fronts is quite normal with spirited driving.

With both your front wheels wearing the same on the inside edges then you do have a problem.

When the inner edge wears faster than than the rest of the tyre, the need for wheel alignment is indicated. There is excessive camber in the front suspension, causing the wheel to lean too much to the inside and putting too much load on this side of the tire. The car may simply need the wheels aligned, but misalignment could be due to sagging springs, worn ball joints, or worn control arm bushings. Because load has a great affect on alignment, be sure the car is loaded the way it's normally driven when you have the wheels aligned.

If you like the way that the F1s have performed apart from the wear rate then you could try Goodyear Excellence which will give nearly the same handling but better wear.

But I do think you have an inherant problem with suspension/wear/alignment so don't blame your tyres yet.

I assume GreyRacer is referring to the Eagle F1 GS-D3.

As regards Wheel alignment, Vicky, it's worth searching out a company that specialises in this field, rather than a Tyre/Exhaust outlet.

The cost of the computers needed to due a full alignment/toe/camber check, run into tens of thousands of £'s.

If money is no object Tyre wise, Michelin Pilot's are quality rubber.

Ah yes I got the old version of the F1 designation mixed up

Scarlett Arrow is quite right in advising to go to a specialist company that does 4 Wheel Laser Alignment Suspension Setup

They will have the correct set-up values on computer for your car. They will takes a set of readings and then correct any that are out of parameter unless there is a mechanical problem that would require prior attention. You should then be given a computer printout of the before and after settings.
