Tow Bar Wiring

I have just purchased a Auris and I am looking at fitting a towbar to carry my bikes. The tow bar seems very easy to fit and does not require the bumper to be removed.

The wiring seems abit more complicated, do I need to fit a bypass relay or could I get away with just tapping into the existing wiring using Scotchlok connectors and changing the tail board bulbs to LED's.

Toyota list two 7 pin wiring kits

PZ457-E9562-00 RHD

PZ457-E9560-00 LHD

The RHD one required a wire to be traced back to the Battery, but the LHD one just connects into the rear lights.

RHD obviously stands for right hand drive. so my suggestion would be to buy that one and spend five mins running a cable to the Battery :)

DO NOT USE SCOTCHLOCKS!

as your just asking for problems or issues with wires corroding or shorting.

That part number for RHD has a fitting time of 2.5 hours, so NO, its not just a case of scotch locking some wires together. That wiring kit is specific to the Auris and will plug and play to the lights, however, there is quite a bit more than just running a block connector to the rear lights, you need to run the wiring loom from the kit under the carpets and through to the Battery, hence the lengthy fitting time

Is there a significant difference in the LHD wiring to the RHD wiring, as for the RHD you need to run a cable to the Battery but not for the LHD. I'm new to Toyota's so am still learning about how they work.

Don't know to be honest, you would be better off downloading both sets of AIM instructions from http;/techdoc.toyota-europe.com and look to see what the differences are. I cannot see there would be much difference, apart from the length / routing of the loom which goes all the way to the front of the car

I've just fitted a Tow bar and the electics. I fitted the PCT towbar which was straight forward to fit and did not require the bumper to be removed. It is a bit tight on the bottom of the bumper but unless you look very closely you cannot spot if. With a bit of carefull cutting you can refit the plastic undertray without losing any of the mountings.

I choose the Toyota Electrics kit which is a bit pricey but does come with everthing you need. All the electrics apart from the indicators are wiring in parallel with the existing circuits as per the conventional 'scotchlok' method. The indicators are wiring via a seperate relay which is what requires the 12V feed from the Battery. This is so that the car only sees one rear bulb load and then switches the rear indicators and tail board. This relay seems a little noisy so I see how it goes.

All the trim panels come off OK but it is a time consuming process to get all the cables installed hence the 2 1/2 hours fitting time.
