Rav 4 2000 Petrol Auto Will Not Run After 2/3 Secs

car has run perfectly since purchased october last year used 3 times on tuesday daytime then at 6 o clock started ran for 2/3 secs then stoped tried again same result ?

It won't fire at all without the right immobiliser chip, I've tried when coding a new cut key. Turns over yes, will not fire.

Short circuit on the ignition side caused by a loose cable which caused the insulation to be worn away and with the vibration of the engine the bare wire touching ground????

Assuming that you have checked it has petrol and no obvious loose bits in the engine bay.

The engine runs for such a short period I am not sure if you will see the engine warning (ECU) light do meaningful things.

IF you have access to a code reader, it might be a good idea to read the OBD2 error memory to see if it can see any stored codes that will provide us some clues.

These are real cheap now and it might be a good investment for the future.

(If you buy one off eBay and want fast delivery make sure that the supply is from the UK and not China.)

I think this one will support a year 2000 petrol RAV4 but can another forum member confirm this ?

Can anyone recommend a good cheap OBD2 for the patient.

Silly question, and unlikely given the symptoms, but worth ruling out . Is there any chance that you or another driver has contaminated the petrol with Diesel ?

I don't think it will but you could get flash codes from it.

I wouldn't even post without trying something first. Is there a spark, is there fuel???
