2010 Rav4 Gearbox Jamming, Known Fault?

So I've only had this car 2 years since new in 2010 (diesel manual) and so far just needed a brand new Battery a couple of months ago.

Has been grinding slightly going into 2nd but not always and then yesterday came out of my daughter's swimming lesson and spent 10 minutes in the car park going nowhere, unable to select any gear with the engine not running, felt like it was jammed fast. I eventually managed to yank it free and it drove home fine until I parked it on my drive and again no gears were selectable....

AA man this morning came out and of course it'd freed itself up I presume as it'd cooled but even he said it was catching going into 2nd and that he fellt the gearbox and clutch might need replacing.

Took it down the Toyota dealer this morning (followed by the AA man) and booked it in since obviously gearbox and clutch should be under a warranty for 3 years. Service manager took my keys off me, drove it round the back and came back and said 'not much wrong with that, I drove it fine round the back' in typical dealer 'don't really believe you' mode.

They're not going to look at it until Tuesday of course but fully expect them to try and give it back with fault not found response. There's no way I'm having that back without either a new gearbox or clutch since I have 2 long journeys in it during this month coming up....I sense a battle coming up!

Anyone else had similar gearbox problems with this model?

1st to 2nd change is or can be a nothcy change and may loosen up as the miles go on.. Its a characteristic of the Rav4 six speed manual gearbox.. Personally I don't find it a problem and tend to change into second early and match the revs to the gear and it changes really well.. My one was greatly improved by having the clutch changed when the engine was done.

One or two have sold their cars and complained bitterly about the gear change quality.. A little excessive maybe ...

Never heard of one getting jammed of binding up badly and would imagine the car will bed in as the miles go on hopefully !!

Its hard to know just what you are describing here. As Charlie says, the 6 speed is always notchy between 1st and 2nd but the later ones are very acceptable. Has anyone changed the gearbox oil by any chance?

It may aslo be that the clutch didn't release and that will certainly stop you getting a clean gear change. Did the pedal feel strange or had you been slipping it?

Is this not this linkage problem that Toyota brought out either (or both) a fix kit for and a TSB ? Haven't heard of one actually jamming before though....surely that's a gubbed pressure plate / clutch problem....?

Kev. OPs car is a 2010 so should already have the revised gear linkage in place...

Best to check the VIN?

I know nothing about this linkage problem and when parts revised, but I have seen plenty of vehicles registered YEARS after they were actually made

I guess I'll just have to see what the dealer says on Tuesday...

The occassional odd slightly notchy change into 2nd from 1st had never really bothored me that much...the problem of not being able to select any gear at all was a real issue though.

To recap, engine was off I was just literally checking I was in neutral before hitting the start button and it felt like it was jammed. Drove back ok eventually after it suddenly freed itself, parked up at home engine off and again you couldn't freely go inbetween gears until the morning.

I honestly think I'm going to get it back with a 'let us know if it happens again' diagnosis !! These sort of faults worry me though especially since we have a couple of trips planned this month!

I can't see them going to all the trouble of going in to check the gearbox for a potential warranty repair myself!

On a lighter note...when I turned up at the dealer, there was a chap just getting into a new RAV4 about to take it for a test drive as I parked up next to him with my AA van escort...the salesman's face was a picture!
