Flashing Engine Light On Super Custom Wagon 2.4L Diesel

I have a grey import 1992 Super Custom Wagon (Hi-ace) 2.4 diesel. It is running well apart from the following - on starting the engine light flashes in a 10 - pause -10 sequence which from my downloaded list of ECU codes refers to the 'starter switch'. The problem I then have is that occasionally the engine cuts out while on the road with usually no warning. I pull over and start it again with no problem whatsoever. Does anyone know if I need to replace either the ignition barrel or the ignition contact or maybe both of these. The car is now living in Portugal and Toyota Portugal is not willing to interpret the code and say what the remedy is without a very expensive visit to their garage.
