Smell Coming Through Vents And Rad Fan Not Working

Hello, I have a 2005 1.8vvti Corolla and just today the fan is not working and there is a smell coming through the vents when the interior fan is switched on, the car is not overheating but was running a little oddly. Does anyone have any ideas?

It smells like burning coolant, I had a Renault 19 once and it was the same smell it had when the heater matrix was leaking but this is different and with the rad fan not working I suspect something maybe more sinister going on!! Hopefully not..
