Hi All

Presently have a Rav4 and looking at buying a yaris.

Should I buy one a year old etc, whats the deal with the warranty? Have you to have it serviced with toyota etc or will my local specialist do?

Also, do the diesels have the filter that can cause engine damage? My place of work is about 3 miles away, so lots of short journeys..

Thanks

If a car has the remainder of the new car warranty (for example the Toyota new car warranty of 5 years/100,000 miles), then that is covered by the Block Exemption Regulations. This allows owners to have their cars serviced outside the franchised dealer network whilst maintaining warranty cover, subject to the servicing and parts being of comparable standard and quality to those recommended by the manufacturer. The one drawback with using a non-franchised dealer for servicing is, if a problem occurs, it is down to the owner to provide proof that the servicing and parts used have been carried out to manufacturer specifications.

If the car has an extended warranty (for example a Toyota extended warranty) , approved used warranty (for example a Toyota Approved Used warranty) or a third party warranty, these are outside the block exemption regulations. The extended warranty, approved used warranty or third party warranty issuer can stipulate who should carry out the servicing (ie a franchised dealer).

One other point worth considering is goodwill. If one's new car warranty has expired, and a problem occurs where you approach the manufacturer for goodwill assistance, the manufacturer is likely to consider a goodwill contribution only if the vehicle has a franchised dealer service history. If the car has been taken out of the franchised dealer network for servicing, the manufacturer is unlikely to provide any goodwill contribution.

If your commute is only three miles get a petrol or hybrid. Diesel is not ideal for such short trips.

If you're torn between diesel and petrol, you really need to consider what annual mileage you expect to do. Generally if less than 15,000, go for petrol.

Diesels will probably have a diesel particulate filter (dpf) - short journeys can cause problems with dpf's.

Yeah, that sort of journey regularly will kill a newer diesel unless you're absolutely hammering it!
