Hot/warm Bonnet

Just got an old ( gen 6 ) Celica ( 1994) and drove it about 5/6 miles. When I parked it up at home,, it smelled a little hot. On investigation, I found that the drivers side bonnet, just above the wheel arch, was very warm. I checked the wheel underneath the area to see if it was binding and caused heat to travel up to the bonnet but this was fine. Looking under the bonnet, I can't see anything that may be obviously responsible for the source of the heat with the possible exception of the alternator (?) which seemed to be quite warm/hot. Is this normal? If not what should I look for to eliminate the problem, I am concerned that whatever is causing it will catch fire and ruin the car.

Possibly worn or partially seized bearings on the alternator. The heat could be from the drive belt which will be slipping on the pulley wheel. Burning rubber smell?
