it drives in 1st and 2nd,

3rd and 4th can only be selected with doing 25mph+.

cannot select 5th gear at all.

any advice, I have heard this a common problem. are we best putting a 2nd hand box in or do we get the one in the car rebuilt,

Depends on how much you are prepared to pay and if the second hand gearbox history can verified. Also if you intend to keep the car rebuild.

I got mine rebuilt for that reason. Came with a years guarantee.

The gearbox bearings were weak and so was 5th gear

I would have it overhauled by a specialist if you intend to keep the car

I had a feeling that I would get a response of you two. 1.Konrad I know you have just recently had a gearbox rebuilt. Can you PM how much yours cost?

I spoke to one breakers yard he wanted £300! that's for a used one.

2. Kingo; I have read your older posts when 5th gear has gone. am I looking for the gearbox specialist to uprate the bearings?

'Gearbox bearings were weak'

I have two of these cars of my own, how often should I be changing the oil to maintain the life of the box. I have not seen any recommendations from Toyota when to change.

Did you see this post from Scott over a month ago?

http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/159372-2003-avensis-t3-s-vvti-18-gearbox-help/

Scott got a second hand Toyota Celica gearbox and installed it into the Avensis. He had to use Celica selector cables which are longer, because the selector mechanism on the gearbox is in a different position.

The post explains what he did to make it all work.

One thing is that Scott used the whole transmission so the top gear 6th ratio of the Celica was virtually the same as the original 5 speed Avensis. The Celica final drive is lower and the six gears are close ratio, to aid sporting drive. Scott confirmed that the 6th gear was showing 3000 rpm at 70mph. Same as my car. The gearbox was fine overall.

If you can get a good second hand gearbox, you will obviously save a bit.

I have PM'd you on the price and possible suppliers in my location.

Konrad

Can you select the gears when all stopped? ... if not, then perhaps linkage problems?

Just a thought.... have you tried an oil change??.... I know it won't have any effect on serious mechanical damage, but some new juice made mine so much smoother... and I could select reverse from start-up without having to go into 1st.....

for the sake of £20.... ??

thank you Konrad. I have seen the post but I don't think at all the 1ad-ftv gearboxes would fit 1cd-ftv engine, totally different, in Scotts case both cars where vvti. I have heard the 1ad gearbox is a better box, I do not want to be the 1st one to try unless the box is dirt cheap and if conversion failed I could sell the box and get my money back.

I have also read this;

http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/156888-04-20-d4d-gearbox-question/

Its very hard to select gears without engine running.

when started yesterday I could hear a metallic sound from gearbox area.

I also realised the right wheel well is full of water? where does it get in? through the top of the light???

I did a quick peep into eBay and found the following:

http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/160935-avensis-20-d4d-1cd-ftv-but-with-a-gearbox-problem-5th-gear/

This is the only match to the year I could find.

Regarding the water in the wheel arch, there is a vent. If you hit a big puddle, the water can enter through this vent. It is supposed to be one way to prevent this happening.

You have not put the eBay link.

maybe I will have a look, but there seems to be a lot of water just from a puddle and through a vent.
