I think you can use gearbox from a Celica which uses a similar engine. Otherwise it is a straight swap or your gearbox rebuilt.

I have an older car and had my gearbox rebuilt. It made a great improvement and fixed all the issues, like a better gear change.

The 6 speed sounds a good idea but you need to make sure that the speedo is calibrated and the shift works. The gearbox needs to have the space to fit.

From what I have seen from car with the extra gear ratio, the six gears are closer and there is not much difference rpm drop. I have seen 5 speed cars with taller gearing than some 6 speed! If your final drive/differential is okay, then you may get the longer gearing instead of the shorter gearing.

After saying alI that, I would stick to keeping to original 5 speed.

Great pictures. It looks like your final drive and differential are badly damaged, from those pictures. My car had the same problem and my mechanic said his gearbox specialist, had never seen it before on a Toyota. Normally it's just bearings. Well, it does happen.

I can say from my gearbox rebuild, the car is very quiet and smooth. Gear change is much better too, with no sticky or notchy changes. Cross gate changes between 2nd and 3rd much easier. Before it was difficult and often missed a gear, or got the wrong gear.

You should have your car back with similar results.

When the car is fixed, let us know how it drives.

opted for the 6 speed celica 140 box...but...i have now asked the celica boys for help lol
Here is my dilemma>>>>>

Suggestions??

Everything about the box is perfect apart from the circled bits which can be removed but....the selector rod from the 5 speed box is totally different from the 6 speed.....

Options are....celica gear cables? as they will be longer to reach the front of the box rather than the rear where the current avensis cables reach....

ANyone know if the celica cables are longer?....defo different part numbers on partsbase/toyo sites & do look longer

All done guys.... worth every bit of hassle it was to do but having driven it now what a different car..... that extra gear makes all the difference trust me, power wise, and a lot quieter on the road too while travelling
Heres my write up..... Celica 6 speed gearbox 1999 - 2005 out of a 140 bhp car - I chose this one as the Avensis has 127bhp.

Problems encountered -

1. Gear selector on the Avensis 5 speed box is at the rear of the gearbox, on the Celica 6 speed it is on the front of the box. Avensis cables dont reach but Celica ones do as they are just under 1.2m in length.

2. The gear lever cradle in Avensis is of no use with the Celica cables as it forces the cables forward, the Celica cradle is required & does fit but needs re-drilled/repostiioned on the prop tunnel bulkhead.

3. A small part of the plastic console fascia where the gearstick gaitor affixes needs cut out to accomodate the gear cradle being further back on the bulkhead, basically it needs cut out roughly 1" depth by about 2" in length just to the side of the handrake handle. Tip to this is when u get the cradle & gearstick try & get the leather gaitor also as u can destich it at the top & bottom and basically use the bit u de-stitch to cover what you have to cut out.

other than that.... thats it..... after a few headscratching moments...hopefully this will help you if u choose to do it.
