Is it a tap....a knock...or a thud?

If it's coming from the top end of the engine it shouldn't be too bad. Possibly a worn cam follower or tappet needing adjustment.

(Does the 5E-FHE have hydraulic tappets? I've had these jam in the past on other cars.)

Don't panic yet Tim.....

The majority of these E series engines fail due to lack of oil or oil starvation, possibly due to running out of oil, or by contaminants in oil - blocking the oil pickup pipe.

Maybe your turbo conversion has come a lot sooner than you thought... :-(

My Seo did the same thing, the mechanic said it was a loose engine mounting.

Had same noise on the old supra.....turned out to be a worn cam lobe maybe worth a look. just run your finger around the lobes you will be able to feel if owt is wrong

hi guys

well i have Just drained the oil from the sump. and i found no bit's at all in the oil ??? Then i replaced the oil and started the car it run completly fine noise then as a it warmed up the noise came back but only on revning the engine, i drove it outside (200 yards to move it) and there were no problems!.

We think it might be bearings maybe on te right hard side of the car and about half way up the engine.

Any ideas chaps

Could it be a dodgy oil pump? - LH (drivers side) side of the engine as you're looking at it, low down?

You could temporarily disconnet the auxiliary belts - alternator, pas, air con and water pump. You could run the engine for a few seconds without the pump.

If it still makes the noise you know its not one of those items.

Oil pump is cam belt driven so you can't disconnect it.

just a quick update

i haven't had time to take the belts off yet.

But when i went to move the car today. i started it! it made the noise on start untill the oil warning light went out  this result starts to make the oil pump idea even more possible.

i think i'm slowly getting there :)
