Wrong Oil ?

My partner has had his Avensis 2.2 D4D for about 7 years now and it has always been a family car so doesn't do many miles per annum, therefore he has never had to top oil up.

However the other day he notice an oil leak so the machanic took it to fix and my partner asked him to do an oil change at the same time.

Before this the car run lovely.

The guy put the wrong oil in when he did the change and now I have black and some white smoke coming out the exhaust, the guy has had it back and change the oil eat but he is now saying my car is done basically and it's time to get rid ???

As I said there was nothing until the oil change and I can't get my head round the fact that now he is saying get rid 😔😡

It's diesel and only got 84' on the clock

Can any one shed any light? Did the wrong oil do all the damage to the engine?

Hello Jenny - welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

What specification oil did your mechanic use? Surely you have some comeback against the mechanic.

The oil type of oil should not cause much of a problem, just the correct amount. Over/under filling can cause problems.

Where was the oil leak and was the leak actually pinpointed?

Depending what was fixed and if the car was put back together properly, this may be causing the problem your car has now.

Things like EGR, DPF, turbo, breather pipes could be causing issues.

Any EML and other warning lights? A diagnostic check may pull any codes.

You may need to take the car to another mechanic who is familiar with your type of engine - Toyota specialist/second opinion.

He put in a fully synthetic oil he has tryed to rectify but he said the oil couldn't have done this to the engine, so I was looking for some second advice really as to weather or not the oil could have, because like I said there was nothing wrong with it till the oil change 😔

do you know which exact 2.2? There are 2 versions a 150bhp & a 180.

The 180 is somewhat more complicated & requires a low ash oil for it's DPF (the 150bhp in the UK won't have a DPF at that age).

Why is the mechanic saying the car is done, what is he claiming is wrong with it?

Oil leak was in a pipe near front, no other lights are coming on and it is a 150bhp

Also apparently whilst it was running the mechanic took the oil cap off and black smoke came out of there ?????

again, what is the mechanic claiming that is wrong with it that means that it is done? I am guessing that this wasn't at a Toyota dealer?

There is a known potential issue with a small % of these engines. Have you noticed your coolant level dropping at all?

He is saying the headgasget is on its way out

OK, that is 1 of the symptoms of the known issue. If it genuinely is that issue then the Toyota-sanctioned fix for the issue is a lot more than just replacing the head gasket & is very expensive. Toyota had an additional goodwill warranty for the issue but it had limits of 112k miles or 7 years so your car is outwith that.

1 of the other symptoms is excessive oil use but I can't really ask you if you had noticed that when you've had a leaking oil pipe ...

Just our luck, it didn't have any excessive oil use all the time we've had it he never had to top up, then the leak and oil change and now all this 😒

I would probably take it to a Toyota dealer & see what they say.

Yes, we got a specialist coming out Tuesday so will post the verdict, thank you for your input 😊 hope there's no known problems with the Yaris 😬

I wouldnt write it off yet..

Black smoke over fueling.. egr

White smoke possible condensation or maybe head gasket.

These cars also come with an oil cooler, a common fault for it to "split"..

check properly
