I've recently bought a high mileage yaris and I've been wondering how i check that the turbo is in good working order. Thanks

If the turbo does not whine or make strange noises, it's probably OK.

Don’t waste your time taking the hoses off and trying to move the shaft up and down. Moving the shaft up and down tells you nothing because the bearing is supported by oil pressure when it’s working so you’re not detecting the actual clearances. You can check the impeller shaft end float without removing the turbo but unless you have a digital indicator gauge on it (or a digital finger tip) you’re only guessing.

Someone advised me to put the car under load so have a few people in it.

Then go up a steep hill and drop it a gear and see if a lot of black smoke comes out. If a lot, lot, then maybe get the turbo off and cleaned.

But if high miles, and done motorway  miles then unlikely to be clogged.

But if high miles and done round town say it was a taxi, (not got a Yaris?) then good chance turbo coked up as turbo has never gotten hot enough to burn carbon deposits off.

I use a turbo cleaner to stay on top and it seems to do okay.
