My 2001 D4D does this too. Given the recent news about how wildly wrong the official emissions figures are, I would be worried that you are seriously harming people around you using your car. I've switched to a hybrid, the Avensis is now only for occasional use when I need a big boot. Even then I feel guilty starting the thing up! Tesla is on order!!!

Thanks for reply   Thinking if I can't get any improvement or solution without going to main dealer    55 miles away   I might think about a tesla myself.      Cheers

How often do you get this cloud of smoke - is it about every 300 to 500 miles? If so it could be a DPF regen going on whereby it blows all the accumulated crud out of the DPF filter right into the face of traffic following behind you.

Otherwise if it's a fairly regular thing, what's your mileage and how about the car's servicing (air filter, oil changes etc) - has that been done within living memory?

I had the same problem on my RAV4 2.2 D4D. It is a 11 plate and the problem was intermittent excessive smoke. I took it to the local dealer and they remapped the ECU as they said that there was a technical bulletin for the occasional smoke.

This has now cleared the problem. This was done under warranty

Try a lovely quick fix costs next to nothing Blank off the EGR valve, it sounds like it's when the EGR valve kicks in, you have loads of un-burnt fuel etc. going into the exhaust, the EGR valve sends burnt/used exhaust gases into the inlet it's to make the engine run worse to stop it producing NOX. Most people think the EGR valve improves running it doesn't, I have heard all the reasons for not doing it before so please don't give me grief.... but I would rather send a bit of NOX down the exhaust than soot and particles etc. If it work and you stop producing black smoke it must be better for your inlet system, I have seen sootted up inlet manifolds and thick coated EGR valves all caused by recirculating used gases full of soot....
