Valvematic oil - correct grade at change and top up.

I have done a bit of research regarding my cars engine oil. My handbook and information on this forum state to use 0w-20 grade.

Now other places like Halfords, EuroCarParts and even Opie Oils recommend 5w-30!

I know that 0w-20 come as Synthetic oils, but there must be a reason why Toyota prefer that grade. Other grades should only be used as substitute as top up only. At oil change time, the correct/preferred grade is 0w-20, as stated in the handbook. I think the term used is "Optifit".

Why are other suppliers outside Toyota recommending 5w-30? I tested Euro using a 2014 Prius, and again 5w-30 oil was recommended!

I have sourced the correct grade oil online and will be ordering soon.

Toyota started using 0W-20 oil when they introduced the Optimal Drive enhancements in non-hybrids back around 2008-09.

0W-20 oil isn't so widely available in accessory shops, etc, and I would surmise that external suppliers will only stock fairly common oils, which 5W-30 is.

I got my oil and filter from Euro Car Parts.

Triple QX SynPlus Fully Syn 0W20 oil, part number 521776261. I had to phone for the part number, so I can order using a discount code.

Total cost £33.13p
