Newbie - Acceleration Hesitation

Hi All

We have just bought an old 2005 2.0 D4D as a second car to cart the kids around in and we love it!! 

Since we purchased it (knowing it needed some TLC) we have had the same issue and I was hoping someone may know the solution?

It takes a few seconds to fire up and on occasion has taken a few attempts, there is also flat spots on acceleration but this does fix itself. Turbo kicks in fine but then change gear and nothing... release foot and re engage accelerator and turbo kicks back in. There is also a engine light which I will get the code for tomorrow...

other than that no smoke no issues great car!

Any suggestions would be a great help!!
