Startup

hi there....i have a 1993 toyota lucida 2.2 TD!recently i have encountered a problem at startup....when i turn the key, it just clicks....after a few tries....it starts!is it the starter motor?battery?immobiliser?

also sumtimes when the engine starts....it makes a very rough noise....this stops after 10secsonds or so..any idea wot that is?

sounds very much like the throw in cog on the starter is sticking ( if its that type ) .take it out and clean the rod then apply a little grease.if its the pre engaged type with the solenoid ontop , the solenoid could be on the way out also.check that the Battery is in good health too.

May just be the inhibitor switch for the gearbox if auto.

Next time it happens, just move the shift lever slightly and try again. This would not explain the rough running though....
