MFD whiteout

Hi All,

On 30th of December, my 2018 Prius MFD went completely white. Any attempts to turn it off resulted in it briefly going dark then whiting out again.

For a week after, the MFD worked intermittently (about every other trip). When it was serviceable, turning off the screen resulted in the persistent whiteout previously described. A week ago the MFD became persistently white on all trips.

Local Toyota dealer unfamiliar with the failure but says poss software update for €120 or €1700 for a replacement.

any of you experienced this kind of failure?

If it is a software issue why would they want to replace the unit. Get a second opinion on this. Reboot and then a reinstall of software before replacement would seem the first thing to consider.

Hi Kev,

If you’ve had your Prius serviced by a Toyota garage, I’d have thought if a complete replacement was required, you’re covered by the 100,000 miles/10 year guarantee?

Hi BhxTrev, thanks for your response. I wrote to Toyota about it but they’ve said the car is only under three-year/100,000km warranty (whichever’s sooner), and they aren’t interested in a “goodwill” fix.

Hi Bper,

Thanks for your reply! Can I reboot myself?

Might see about the SW update all right.

Has the car been serviced in Toyota dealer, do you have a relax warranty at all? You may need to push the dealer to fix under warranty conditions at all cost.
Good luck

Does sound like software and the Toyota dealer are naturally quoting you a price for software update and then the worst scenario of a new unit.

Hopefully a software update will sort it 🤞

I think the previous comments that Toyota should cover this under the relax warranty are in good faith correct.  However after reading the items not covered in the relax warrenty would the multi functional display be classed as a multimedia system.  If it is it is excluded as an item not covered.

I think it would be worth while to contact a couple of Toyota dealers and ask the question.

Also I would send an email to Toyota HQ to confirm if the MFD falls under this.

Regarding the issue with whiteout the failure of the MFD is common, however the fault is normally attributed to a circuit board failure. If you cannot get this replaced under the warrenty then I would look for a MFD repair online. It will require you to remove and send the MFD off . Hope this helps

I have to say if this happened to me & the MFD wasn’t covered by the relax warranty I’d be seeking legal advice. I was told that as long as I have my car serviced by a Toyota dealer that until I’d done 100,000 miles or the car was 10years old, then the Toyota warranty would be extended for another year.

This warranty obviously doesn’t cover wear & tear items but I would have thought other than not covering the update on the MFD, this item would be fully covered under the warranty. I was lead to believe the relax warranty was simply an extension of the original warranty. Toyota need to come clean on whether the relax warranty really is the same as the original warranty, or is a watered down version, making paying for an independent warranty a better option.

Of course if your car has been serviced by any other garage outside the Toyota dealership, then the relax warranty would be void. Kevin has your car always been serviced by a Toyota dealer?

The MFD may be classed as multimedia if so its not covered by relax, these fail due to heat

i would just pick up a used one and be done with it, then mess with main stealer

MFD - do you mean the instrument cluster or the radio/display

Just makes me wonder what else isn’t covered by the relax warranty!

Yes, always Toyota serviced, but don’t forget I’m in Ireland, where warranty conditions might be different. Eh on NI you get a five year warranty, but only three in ROI.

Take the stereo out of the car, unplug the sat nav module, plug the USB cable (square grey plug) into the main unit (DA) and see if it boots up

this shows you how to remore the trim rhd is just a mirror image - the trim is clipped in place, remove it with a trim tool or taped up screwdriver

Hi Trevor,

I think many of us owners think that the relax warranty covers us for most items but it is worth while reading the terms and conditions of the warrenty. You may be surprised at what is not covered. I posted some time ago when do they class wear and tear as the problem and how is this assessed against a genuine manufacturer equipment failure.

I am informed by other members that Toyota are generally fair in this assessment but one dealers opinion may not be another's so what do you do, take the car to maybe a couple of them and if they both confirm the same maybe that's the best option.

Hi Flash23,

Thanks for the advice and link: So I’m unplugging a cable from the satnav and fitting it elsewhere?

As for Toyota relax, I think I fall between the cracks as I’ve only 63,000km done…

No: looking closely it’s 2 years OR 85,000km

Taking a step back, Relax is a service generated extended warranty, and extended warranties, regardless of vehicle manufacturer, differ from the new car extended warranty in that coverage is more limited. With Relax, the vehicle has to be serviced within the Toyota dealer network to generate the extended warranty.

As the OP's car is over 2 years old and has covered less than 185,000km it will be eligible for Relax provided it has been serviced within the Toyota dealer network.

However, the terms and conditions of Relax don't include multimedia units/in-car entertainment within coverage.

Bear in mind that some manufacturers include in-car entertainment units within their extended warranties and some don't, so Toyota isn't alone in not providing extended warranty coverage for these units.

As always, it is important to check terms and conditions of purchases, etc, to ensure that they meet your needs and expectations.

From Flash22’s video I’m turning onto the idea of getting an android screen.
Anyone tried it?

yes just the square grey plug from the nav to the main unit, you can't get it wrong

Android unit are more of a miss that a hit 98% of them are low quality Chinese junk with no documentation or support, tbh a half decent system will set you back £450 upwards (inc fascia and adapters) for something with all the bells and whistles

Thanks again for your advice. Curiously enough it came back working for one trip today. Might be worth getting back there and doing a little re-racking all right.

One android radio outfit sent me the link to their work below :

You are lucky that you do not have the JBL headunit, so replacement with an aftermarket one, if needed, would be very straightforward.

I have so far contacted three radio specialist and none of them have a plug and play solution to the JBL unit in my car 🤨
