Toyota Regius – faulty instruments

1997 Toyota Regius, 3.0 diesel auto.

I have a problem with the instrument cluster in that the speedometer, tachometer and fuel gauge don't work. The odometer display comes on occasionally. Everything else is OK – the warning lights, the gear display and the temperature gauge all work fine. I tried a replacement instrument cluster but it showed the same problems. Anyone any idea what might produce these symptoms?

I have a GPS speedometer but having no fuel gauge is a bit of a pain. I was wondering if it would be possible to connect a temporary fuel gauge. I believe the sender unit in the fuel tank is accessible through a hatch in the floor but does anyone know whereabouts it is?

Thanks.

Clean the plug and check the pin fitment, plug and unplug multiple times is it a solid PCB or a flexible film type - some have modules for the gauges
