IQ clutch pedal travel

Hi,

Just jumped into my daughter's  '08 1.0l 5-speed manual iQ that has only done 35k Miles and thought biting point was very low ie 2 inches off floor max.

Is this normal?

Is there any adjustment available?

Would appreciate your thoughts.

TIA, David.

It is worth bleeding the clutch as it's more than likely never been done (make sure you do it on level ground and keep the res topped up), there is not much adjustment in the pedal TBH only the stops and free play are adjustable

it may just be a worn clutch as the early IQ's had the 180mm clutch what was replaced with a 190mm clutch in later cars as it would wear out quickly and or slip as such it would need replacing between 20-40K miles and some as low as 10K miles

Ive been through the whole clutch system on mine....if its down the bottom then youve either lost fluid or, maybe a master cylinder issue....35k i would say not a worn clutch but more sounds like lost fluid...check the level just under the bonnet on the left hand side at the back...

Check all the lines...make sure theyre all tight...

Oh - is the car parked on a slope?

Car is booked in to local mechanic tomorrow to try to diagnose.

If I recall correctly the fluid is shared with the brake reservoir; it is at max.

Pedal is on the floor OR won't even disengage clutch (daughter now understands that the grinding sound is the teeth in the gearbox being ripped and she shouldn't push it into gear 🤦🏻‍♂️).

Overnight it is parked on a fairly steep slope but has been this way for over a year, fault only started last week.

Strangely the biting point has moved back to the top for a day or so then dropped back to the floor 🤷‍♂️

Will post an update when I know more...

Be interested to know....i ended up going through the whole clutch system myself after i had the same problem but the local garage wanted 1100 for replacing the clutch....did it myself in the end (first time ive ever really worked on the car)...

are you loosing fluid? the reason i say is ironicially after going through everything (on mine) in the end it was a loose hose connector that i couldnt even see...just under half a turn....if you locate the bleed nipple...open the bonnet just to the right of the centre of the engine and toward the back (look down towards the back) put a 10mm spanner on that and make sure its tight...then youll have to feel for it but theres a solid hose going into the back of it (wot i missed) check that as well...

If its parked on a slope and the fluid isnt full, and its taken air in (open line for example) then itll draw air in and thats exascerbated by the slope as the exit for the reservoir is at the back....i would say definately a fluid issue...it could be the master cylinder...if it is...ive got one here from mine...i took the original one out, replaced the centre section with a service kit but found after replacing that with a whole new unit that it wasnt that in the end....

The other place is down on the engine where the hose goes into the slave....if its leaking in there, it should be able to exit as from recollection the bell housing does have air gaps...

IIRC the IQ has a similar clutch to the Mk1 and Mk2 Yaris and has what feels like an extremely short throw if you're used to the clutch in e.g. Fords and German cars. I liked it as it facilitated fast clutch work, not like my mate's Audi where the pedal had what felt like 3 feet of dead travel

It should bite right in the middle of the pedal travel, unlike e.g the Aygo where the bite is right at the end of the travel, to the point it can be hard to tell if you're at biting point or have actually lifted off the clutch pedal already!

The clutch is supposedly self-adjusting so should always bite around the middle until the clutch is worn down. You are correct that it shares a hydraulic reservoir with the brakes.

If this is on a steep hill, my gut feeling is with @flash22's suspicion that the clutch disc may just be worn, or possibly the pressure plate springs have collapsed; Do you know when the clutch was last changed?

After my experiences learning to drive, trying to do things like reverse parallel parks and turn in the roads and moving off on extremely steep hills in BSM's Most Gutless Car, I can imagine that clutch getting worn down a lot faster than he average!

With low miles, I would suspect pressure plate or slave, early IQ's did have the 180mm clutch

it's a case of while you're in there job do a 3 part clutch price wise 650-800 is in the ballpark, £1100 is, go away we don't want the job price

£1100 sounds like dealer rates for the job, but may also be the garage has done IQs before and found them difficult; I don't know if they're more awkward due to the compact size, as I found smaller cars seemed to be more expensive. My diesel Yaris was £1200 by the dealer, and £700-800 at most garages about 10 years ago.

Mobile mechanic mate did it for £600 all-in IIRC.

Ok, local independent garage have told me to budget £1,500, main stealer want £1,800.

To put things in perspective a new 3 part clutch by LUK is £250 so that is a lot of labour cost.

Apparently Toyota books the job as 7hrs PLUS a further hour for steering realignment.

Car is back at home whilst I look for other options...

I reckon an independent should charge about £800-£1,000, based on my experience...

Have now found an independent clutch / gearbox specialist who have agreed a 3 part clutch supplied & fitted for £650 including gearbox oil change at same time.

Booked in for two weeks time 😃

If you do things multiple times, you soon get it down to an art and find shortcuts, you can do a mk3 or 4 escrote clutch in 30-40 min on a 2 post lift
