Ticking sound when stopped and idling

I have recently bought a 2017 Toyota Auris and when we stop at the end of a reasonable length journey and don't turn the engine off we get a noticeable ticking sound after a few seconds which foes not stop. We don't notice it when stopping while travelling for lights, queues etc. Just wondered what the ticking is and whether it is something that we should have looked at ? Any insight will be appreciated.

Hi,

what engine type and transmission  is your car and if possible  to record this ticking sound and share then we can understand better and give you some insights.

Sorry - it is a 1.2 petrol engine and it is a Business Edition model with manual gear box.

Ok,

cars with turbo create a lots of heat while driving and the turbo has a heat shield around it and like any other car with internal combustion engine heat shielding along the exhaust pipes. Very likely the ticking sound comes from one or more of this heat shield metal sheet as they get hot they expand and then when cooling down they contract. Here is the part in question and almost certain any ticking noises will come from it as a result of temperatures expansion and contraction. Other ticking sound might be from the high pressure fuel pump located on top of the engine., but this will be presented at any one time when the engine is idling. Perhaps nothing to worry about. 👍

Many thanks for your reply. We will monitor it over the next few weeks and if we are concerned will contact the seller as it does have a 3 month warranty.

My Mk2 Yaris made a ticking sound too; I was told it was just the valve tappets being noisy due to the very thin oil; Seemed like a common thing for that engine (1NR-FE) as most of the ones I'd looked at did the same thing (The ones that didn't seemed to have been given 5w30 instead of 0w20)

I always leave the car for a minute before turning off to allow the turbo to cool down but I haven't heard any ticking from the engine before.👍

It now sounds like a ticking or popping sound as if it is to do with the exhaust. Can hear it to when stopping at junctions, traffic lights etc. It stops as soon as the engine has been turned off. It starts after the engine has been running for a short time.
