Can anyone advise what this belt does in the picture?

Corolla E12 model

Drive / auxiliary 

The drive belt powers the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, and AC compressor. Each of these components contains a pulley where the drive belt wraps around.

Hi Michael,its also called serpentine belt it goes around various engine components, typically including the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, and sometimes the water Hope this helps

Can this be a diy job or does a mechanic have to fit it?

Hi Michael, its not difficult but can be a bit fiddly and it depends on your level of DIY skills.Have a look at this video it will give you an idea how to change the belt. Hope this helps.
