Estima Hybrid OBD monitoring apps

Hello
Just starting a new consolidated and comprehensive forum post about Estima Hybrid OBD monitoring apps and in particular in relation to monitoring the hybrid Battery

Will need a bluetooth OBD adapter. There is information about these all over the internet and YouTube, a good one is
https://hybridassistant.blogspot.com/p/obd.html

Will cover:

Hybrid Assistant
https://hybridassistant.blogspot.com/p/about.html
(Android only)

DrPrius app
although mainly for Prius, can get some useful Battery info for the Estima Hybrid, but need to understand the different cell layout (see later)
https://www.priusapp.com/

Just noticed it says
27. 2006 Estima Hybrid (partial support on Android and Amazon Fire)
28. 2006+ Estima Hybrid (full support on Android and Amazon Fire)   //but I cant see how to get full info in the way it expects?

TorquePro

Later might also cover diagnostic monitoring with
Carista
Toyota TechStream  (need USB OBD cable and Windows laptop)

----

Estima instrument panel

Just for info, the standard instrument panel

Original Japan settings were km/ kmph / km-per-litre
But usually converted to miles/mph/miles-per-litre   [even though display shows km/L it is actually miles/L  and so 7.0 ==  32mpg]
Everything except approx range is actually in miles   (range estimate is still in km and with full tank is approx 750km)

Hybrid Assistant

https://hybridassistant.blogspot.com/2016/08/quick-user-guide.html

Figures are correct in the apps selected units  even if the vehicles speedo unit is converted to miles/mph/miles-per-litre
ie if set app set to km it will be showing as true km/kmph etc
if set app to use miles it should be mph/mpg etc (and set imperial for uk gallons)

Here’s a typical screen, while fast cruising   [mine is set to default metric units]
//seem to have lost the image

speed   green indicator = gps based?
consumption – can do Inst or Ave
and km/L  (higher better) or L/100km (lower is better)    [values cross at approx 7.7 which equates to about 35mpg]

Sometime near start of journey it will incorrectly detect fuel usage and give crazy bad figure, but then corrects itself later  -- especially seems to happen if clock was out of sysnc with the vehicle and then jumps to resync)

Idling (image below at end of run) will show similar but Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) usually wont be running

Temperatures below arel be current end-of-run values, and dropping, if idling at the end of a run
And only Ave consumption figures for the trip show data

image.thumb.png.006e7aeb726838d048270aae2de70afa.png

The various info and field to be discussed later
or in the earlier quick-user-guid.
Slightly poor fuel economy on that run
Avg 9.63L/100km == 29.3mpg   approx right
Toyota indicator that is really m/L for me (even though labelled km/l) was showing approx 6.2m/L ==28mpg

Hybrid Assistant HV Battery monitoring -- to be covered later

HA Reports

Can be created/viewed at end of journey. Marked as ‘HV’ if HV (high voltage) Battery data in it ?

Sometimes get spurious reading at the start of a report which also messes up overall distance and consumption
(as per the time sync issue mentioned earlier)

To be discussed in more depth later

DrPrius

Here's a typical screen showing Battery state
(idling after a run)

This is the layout it shows for the Estima Hybrid, as the Battery layout is different to what it is expecting if it was a Prius
For the Estima there are six main 19.2V cells (actually six pairs of 9.6V bottom cells) and nine 14.4V cells
The bar chart is useful as the first six and last nine should all be in reasonable balance

image.thumb.png.7575481e6c3a5489679ba2d8513cfb4c.png

voltages will drop when driving on electric
and rise when charging
The up and down movement is expected and the important thing is for all cells to move in approx unison (balanced)

Cant trust some of the values at the top of the screen  //to be discussed further later

internal resistance at the bottom (unclear how accurate) is also useful and figures should be around 18-23   (other sources of info imply getting up to 28 or more is bad)

TorquePro

Useful to show ICE engine revs, especially if you miss having a tachometer (even though it is not directly useful being CVT  and usually in the 1800-2800 rpm range but can see when petrol enine off and at the other extreme may see it reving to 6000 rpm if a spirited run.

(But can also see engine rpm in Hybrid Assistant)

It is possible to add some additional sensor  eg for Prius Gen2/3
but unclear if/how they would relate to the Estima

Below is a typical screen [to follow maybe] when

plus added Prius cell V1 voltage, but is shows 6V ?

Hybrid Assistant HV Battery monitoring

If select the option Battery monitoring (from the spanner icon)
will see cell layout, similar to DrPrius  ie six 9.2v + nine 14.4v
At then end of the run, the report generator will graph out some info
//to be discussed more fully later

eg here was a 5 minute, sitting in the driveway with some minor EV powered moving

See the state of charge (SOC, yellow area) drop and voltages drop slightly (top line for 19.2V cells, bottom line for 14.4v)
then soon after as engine start and starts to charge the voltage and SOC goes up
Then half way through, charging stops, and voltahe come down to normal

The 'glitch' 3/4 of the way along was some minor EV driving, rather than just idling

Graphs for a real run to follow

Mpg = instrument panel reading x 4.54

7x4.54=31.78mpg

8x4.54=36.32mpg

I think Instrument panel reading not record engine warmup, not accurate when too many morning cold start especially in winter, but very accurate when you do a long run, ie: from Sheffield to Newcastle return.

Yes when I do multiple short runs on cold mornings (non hybrid) the tank can empty pretty quick!
