Deffo walk away, a garage has to tell you if the car has been CAT damaged, best go elsewhere for a Kebab, far too many get rich quick garages appearing. I always get the address of the garage then Google map it and drop the little man in the road outside the garage and look to see what the buildings are like, it can tell you a lot,  here's an example, here's my wife's car what got written off, it had 11mths MOT when this happened, I think it was 3yrs ago now, we were told not to had over the LOG book (V5) when the car was collected and it was back on the road within 4wks with the remainder of the MOT, if any of the members have this car, it was written off.

That's a good point - You need to be careful with the V5C when transferring the car to someone else; When my brothers' old MPV got written off he didn't keep the V5C or take the transfer of ownership bit before the insurance company took it with the rest of the paperwork, and he ended up getting a load of speeding fines!

Thankfully he could prove the insurance company had taken the car and that he wasn't anywhere near there the offences occurred, so the police eventually cancelled them, but it was a hassle dealing with it all.

It is indeed a good point, never trust the money grubbing types.

My pal  had months of trouble after part ex ing his car, and not sending off the V5 himself, trusting the dealer to do it.

Speeding tickets galore based on his old motor being in places he had never been.

Of course they always say they will do it to ensure that it is done properly, yeah right.

We bought this place when the previous occupant died. They obviously had a car, because we get numerous letters addressed to the previous occupant from councils, TFL, DART charge, debt collectors and have had bailiffs knocking for the last three years. The old car's taxed insured and MOT'd, but the current owner has obviously cottoned on to the fact that as long as they don't re-register it, they can do what they like.

It's a pain in the proverbial but if you are sufficiently patient/perseverant/bloody-minded you can get through to the DVLA, and possibly Police, to de-register the car from your property, and they can also tag the car which will flag it up on the Police ANPR for some extra schadenfreude :naughty:

Yes., if serviced within the dealers network you can sign up on Toyota website and add the car reg number and vin and then you can check and look at any previous services, any recalls done etc.

After registering with MyToyota you need to verify ownership with the reference number from the new V5, which you can't do until the new copy arrives in the post.

But, you can go to / call your local dealer, or any Toyota dealer, and they can retrieve the service info for you. They normally see a bit more than what is visible through MyToyota.

The paint code is on the VIN plate, found on the door frame and in the engine bay. This video may help.

Hi all I like to thank you for helping me to find my son a new yaris .

He is OK.

Well I'll have to start AGAIN . As today 7th he was coming home from work around 510pm  and was T boned by a bus .  The driver failed to stop at the junction  and plowed right into the drivers side from front wing to back wheel  all shoved in. as the bus is but higher than the yaris it missed the sill and hit the door full on . It was a clipper type bus bit bigger than the mini bus type .

We had the phone call off his boss about 5 to 10 mins later as one the woman who works with him was just across the road pickingnup her kids from day school she called her husband who called my sons boss he arrived and help to get him out the car with other ppl bus driver helped too  he was very shocked an shaken up he said he just wanted to drive off   for some reason he  couldn't explaine why  so they helped him out as my sister lives at.the top of the road that the bus came out off. I called her to go down and help . So we are now back home  hes home had somthing to eat and he's went to bed ..

He's not hurt  no marks cuts bruises.

He going to have tommow off

11 days he had that car just filled it up with gas .

So we got all the insurance stuff to sort out now .

So looking for clean yaris no bumps AGAIN .

Blimey, that's shockingly bad luck indeed. Back in 1992 when I was only 20 myself, I had been given a company car to drive from Telford to London in to go on a training course, but as I was leaving Telford, some plank pulled straight out of a side street on my left directly in my path as he was turning right from out of the side street, and it hit my car hard, causing me to loose control, drive straight across the road and hit a brick wall opposite, writing off the car I was in, which at the time was a 1989 Renault 21, just three years old. I was seriously shaken up and had to go to hospital, but was let out later with just minor injuries. Later that same year, I had another accident this time in my own car, where exactly the same thing happened again, but in a different place, and it caused damage to the front of my car. So that was twice in the same year to have the same type of accident.

These things happen unfortunately, and I had an accident just last year when my last Yaris got written off due to being driven into the back of by another driver from behind.

Even though I was not to blame, because I had made a claim on her insurance, I had to subsequently declare on insurance renewal that I had had an accident, claim, or conviction within the last 5 years, and this sadly has an effect on the renewal price for the next 5 years.

I just hope your son is able to get insurance again for an affordable price following this accident, even though it was not his fault, he would have to go through his insurer to make a claim against the bus company, and that will increase his future premiums for the next 5 years.

It may be possible to settle with the bus company without going through insurance, but I am not sure how you would go about doing that. In any case, on his renewal, he would have to make a declaration as to whether he had had any accidents, claims or convictions in the last 5 years, regardless of blame, and as he had indeed had an accident, he would have to declare that, or if the insurer found out he had had an accident and had not declared this, his insurance would be null and void.

Before buying another car, it may be wise to speak to his insurer to find out what his renewal would likely to rise by due to this accident, even though not his fault - they may decide to hike the premium as he is deemed a higher risk due to having an accident so soon after obtaining a car. They work in strange ways insurers do, and my own premium got hiked last year following my claim on the third party, so it can and does happen - even though it was someone else's fault.

It's funny how some peoples insurance premium apparently goes up after an accident - I found it had almost no effect! :confused1:

Of all the claims and non-fault claims I've had, the insurance never went up by more than it usually did, and if it went up a lot I'd just change insurers. If anything the premiums have, on average, gone up more in the years I haven't had any claims!

I'm glad your son's okay - Is this his first accident?? It's a very freaky and disconcerting experience the first time but hopefully the shock will wear off soon and he can get back on the road.

Just chalk it up to experience, esp. with how to deal with the insurance companies and getting some first hand experience of how they treat you after they've got your money!

If it makes him feel any better, he's still not beaten my mate's record, who owned his first car for approximately 2 hours before writing it off

(He was very lucky as it was still on the 3-day drive-away insurance! He also got paid out more than he paid for the car!! )

Yes. Weird. In the case of my wife's accident (mentioned in another thread) it significantly increased the premium for my car, but on renewal hers was pretty much just what you'd expect with 'inflation'.

I have no hypothesis to explain that.
