Black Smoke, non Running.

Good afternoon.

I own a 2010 Rav 4 2ltr D. 77k miles.

Two months ago it cut out whilst driving, and failed to restart, it would only belch out clack smoke. It has since been in the local garage (not Toyota) and they have now given up after trying lots of things. Changed one injector, cleaned DPF, and a few other things. Car will now start and turn over, but not rev, and still belches lots of black smoke. I have also had an auto electrician look at it, but is also scratching his head. Everyone agrees, the car and engine appear in good condition, but just not working.

Any ideas?

Regards

Mark

Hi Mark, failing to rev and billowing black smoke points towards a fuel delivery or air intake issue. A clogged fuel filter, a dirty fuel filter can restrict fuel flow and cause black smoke. Replacing the fuel filter might be a simple solution.

Faulty fuel njectors, you mentioned one injector was replaced, but there could be an issue with other injectors as well. They could be faulty or clogged. Consider getting a fuel injector cleaning service done or replacing the injectors altogether.

Fuel pump,a failing fuel pump wouldn't deliver enough fuel pressure, causing the engine to run poorly and smoke.A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing a rich fuel mixture more fuel, less air and black smoke. ensure the air filter is clean. Mass air flow sensor, A malfunctioning MAF sensor can send incorrect signals to the engine computer, also causing improper air fuel mixture and black smoke.

Since a mechanic and auto electrician couldn't diagnose the issue, consider taking your car to a Toyota dealership or a mechanic specialising in Toyotas. They might have a better understanding of these engines and the specific problems they encounter.Hope this helps.
