Clunk When Changing Gear

:o hi

i have a Rav4 Nreg, it has a bit of a clunk coming from the rear of the car when i change gear. if i change gear slowly and labour on the clutch i can get ride of the clunk, but generally it clunks.

any idea etc from the group

I have the same thing in my '96 rav4 and have been told by a friend who has one, that theirs also does this.

probably wear in the rear union joint on the prop shaft. ( slapping )

turn the prop by hand ,side to side quickly, and see how much free play there is on it. :thumbsup:

Yeah, this one does that too but mainly when it's cold.

I just put it down to the mileage (P-reg, 96,000 miles - mainly in 3rd gear) and the abuse (towing, bouncing along potholes tracks too fast, combinations of both) it's had to put up with!

Like ashleypw I find that I automatically drive around it.

My wifes also does this (1995 120K) at the mot nothing was apparent so probably the diff carrier rubbers gone soft allowing the diff to lift upwards causing the clunk.If anyone knows exactly whats worn let us all know.
