Land Cruiser Head Gasket Problem ?

Hi, all,

Newbe owner here, can anyone help ??

I've got a 1998 3 ltr Turbo diesel Colorado, which is losing water & is down on power. I've had it about 12 months, it doesn't lose water when standing for any time, only when running, when it pushes coolant out of the rad/expansion tank at a rate of knots !!

Local dealer not interested, but the garage who look after my taxi say they could do it if they can get engine data to remove/replace the head.

Can anyone plese help me get it fixed ?? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Steve.

Hi Steve ,cracked heads and blown gaskets often have symptoms such as a cappocino like froth on the inside of the oil filler cap.

Sometimes steam comes out with the exhaust.

The pressure inside the coolant system can become higher due to compression gases escaping from the compression chambers into the coolant system. When this happens the coolant system can sometimes keep the radiator hoses hard all night.

This maybe the reason the coolant is being pushed into the overflow bottle

Another common symptom is an acrid, burning smell as the coolant leaks into the compression chamber and burns with the fuel.

Before you pull the head get a specialist cyl head repairer who knows there stuff. to have a look.

Ask him the hard questions on why he arrived at his diagnosis.

Get rock solid guarranties on what constitutes a rebuilt head.

Andys price seems in the right range when I convert into Aussie $

Also is there any chance its a radiator cap or thermostat. The petrol engines get those problems when those 2 items are not working.

If you have the 1KZ-TE engine you can look online or download the manual from here  http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/info/

Would say that you have a cracked head or gasket problem, these people do a fully built head for about £600  http://www.ukcylinderheads.co.uk/ .

Hi, Andy,

many thanks, I'll try the links & let you know........

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,

I believe that 1998 the colorado 3.0 td engine was prone to micro fractures in the cylinder head occurring around 50 to 60k miles. I too have a 98 model and am keeping an eye on it. Toyota were aware of it and apparently fixed affected engines. Not sure how you check if it was done or not, or indeed if you still have recourse to toyota for a fix that should have been done under warranty.

Hope this helps.

I forgot to mention the bubbles that wont go away in the radiator coolant when you remove the cap.

Hi, TBone,

Thanks for info, problem is finding sympathetic Toyota dealer in my area, thanks anyway.....

I'm looking to get it sorted soon, hopefully it will be gasket rather than head failure ! even so it will be expensive.......

Thanks again,

Regards,

Steve
