91 Previa Awd Looking For Advice

hi folks,

I have a 91 awd Previa with almost 300,000km. when backing or moving forward slowly with the wheels cut the left front wheel feels like it is binding or almost not turning. you can feel the engine working to move to vehicle. I am also getting some noise from - I think from the front left while under load although it may be the drive train. I don't notice the problem unless i am moving slowly and have the wheels turned

I was thinking it must be the axle and have replaced both up front but the problem persists. The brakes are fine and are not sticking. I don't think it could be bearing as they would not cause the binding issue.

I understand their is an auxiliary shaft (sometimes referred to as a "sad shaft", could this be the problem - I hope not as this looks to be an expensive part and lots of labour.
